When it comes to vending machines, most people think of drinks and snacks. In Japan, however, vending machines have gone far beyond expectations—if it fits, it can be sold. To ease labor pressure, a Lawson store in Tokyo launched an automated store initiative, introducing a fried chicken vending machine. After payment, customers simply scan a QR code and receive freshly fried chicken in about one minute—delivering both efficiency and an enhanced consumer experience. Beyond hot food, frozen roasted sweet potato vending machines have also been deployed in Miyazaki Prefecture, Kyushu. Individually vacuum-sealed, hygienic, and ready to enjoy, they meet niche consumer demand and have been warmly received.
From freshly prepared meals to chilled specialty products, vending machines are redefining the boundaries of retail.
